The Book Fair Survival Guide: What to Bring, Wear and Know Before You Go

Walking into a major book fair for the first time can be both exciting and slightly overwhelming. There are books everywhere. Booths in every direction. Events happening throughout the day. People stopping for conversations, and people rushing somewhere else entirely. Within an hour, you may realize you should have prepared just a little better.

So before your next book fair adventure, here’s a practical survival guide.

Wear Shoes You Actually Trust

This is not the day to test whether uncomfortable shoes “might be okay.” They will not be okay. Book fairs usually involve far more walking than visitors expect, so comfortable footwear should be near the top of your list.

Bring a Bag With Space

You may not plan on buying anything. We admire your optimism. Between books, brochures, catalogs, bookmarks, postcards, and giveaways, you’ll probably accumulate more than expected — so leave room.

Carry a Portable Charger

Your phone becomes incredibly useful at a book fair. You’ll use it for photos, notes, QR codes, schedules, maps, and exchanging contact information. A portable charger can save the day.

Take Photos of Things You Want to Remember

See a book you’re interested in but don’t want to carry? Take a photo. Find an author you want to research? Take a photo. Spot an interesting publisher or service? You already know the answer.

After several hours surrounded by thousands of titles, remembering everything becomes surprisingly difficult.

Don’t Overplan

A schedule helps, but don’t fill every minute. Leave room to wander — some of the best parts of a book fair happen between the things you planned.

Talk to People

Booths aren’t museums. You don’t have to silently look and walk away. Ask about a title. Ask what someone recommends. Ask what they’re showcasing. Most exhibitors are there because they want those conversations.

Finally: Stay Curious

Perhaps the most useful thing to bring cannot fit inside your bag — curiosity.

Walk into sections you don’t normally visit. Read unfamiliar covers. Listen to recommendations. A book fair gives you the rare opportunity to discover hundreds of things in a single day.
